A friend that worked there confirmed that the damage done is much less than everyone had anticipated. The fire took place on the ceiling, when people were working on the top. No one was hurt, the ceiling was damaged but everything inside is fine. The area affected was still under construction and the Cats Broadway Show is still happening on schedule in a few days.
Tap & Pay is pretty much what it says it is, you tap your card on the KNET machine, and the money is extracted. If it use to take you on average 30 – 60 seconds to pay, now it will take you 5 seconds. It’s a nice feature, but I do have security concerns. If I lost my
credit card I normally aren’t worried because my card is password protected, but with this payment method, someone can walk around and just tap and pay everywhere.
To use this feature, you’ll have to renew your
credit card to get the Tap & Pay service, from what I understood you cannot opt-out of the service, every new card will be a contactless card whether you like it or not. They currently have an offer with Magnet, one of my favorite places to go study. Wherein if you use the Tap & Pay service, your coffee will be free paid by NBK.
Starting from January 1st, 2017 unauthorized people that use the disabled’s parking spot will be fined up to 200 KD and/or 1 month of jail. I very much endorse this move, if you don’t respect your fellow disabled friends, that doesn’t mean you can take their spot. You can read about [my experience] when I got fed up once and stood next to disabled’s parking lot to tell people they can’t park there.[Source]
I’d love to see [this guy] face a month of jail time.
Someone I know came back to his car and just so happened to find his licence plate had disappeared, because he was parking at an illegal spot. So I thought it would be a nice idea to post what he had to go through to get it back and how much he had to pay, as there are many rumours on the cost of this penalty.
- You have to pay 20 KD for this fine + have to pay all other fines on your drivers licence
- He went the same day to get his licence plate back, but couldn’t because they close down at 3pm and the licence plates of that day have not returned yet by to the headquarters
- When he got his licence plate the next day, it didn’t come with the screws so he had to go to Shuweikh and buy screws
I recommend someone open a licence plate screws installment delivery app, you’re going to make a lot of money.
I got news that Mada is shutting down it’s services for B2C, but will remain offering services to businesses. They are now doing a massive restructuring after being bought by Zain back in 2012 and have decided to divert the taskforce to focus on businesses.
Those that have a Mada subscription can no longer renew to their same subscription anymore, Mada has also shut down many if not all their physical stores. The good news is, Mada customers and those that want a subscription with Mada can get a limited time deal through Mada offered by Zain (isn’t available with Zain directly).
The two deals offered are as follows:
- 26 month subscription (first 2 months are free)
- 1TB monthly capacity
- Free MIFI or Free Router
Price: 8KD / Monthly
- 14 month subscription (first 2 months are free)
- 2TB monthly capacity
- Free MIFI or Free Router
Price: 10.500 KD / Monthly
The subscriptions above are directly dealt with through Zain, after you subscribe through Mada, so you don’t need to worry about them getting cancelled or stopped because Mada is stopping their customer services.
Starbucks just celebrated their 100th store opening at Karizma Villa in Kuwait. I don’t know why I always felt they had more than 100 stores but I guess Kuwait is tiny and 100 stores is a huge milestone. I wonder if they’ll be introducing speciality coffee to blend in with the new trend.
Bad news for people who often can’t find parking spots so they park in places they’re not supposed to. The new law effective immediately will have a policeman remove your licence plate and/or confiscate your drivers licence if he deemed you’re parking in an illegal spot, you will have to request them back and the penalty goes up to 4 months.
Not only that, but it’s illegal to drive a car without a licence plate, so you’re going to have to call a winch service to come pick up your car. I think the app Winch is going to benefit massively from this new law being applied. Kuwait doesn’t have enough parking areas as is, it’s going to be a mess.
The fear of going to your car and finding the license plate has been removed.

Update: The police appear to be dead serious about this, a coworker sent a video of a guy driving showing how many cars were missing licence plates.. let’s just say a lot.
Update 2: My favourite reply from one of the blog readers that posted this on Kuwaitiful’s Facebook Page:
“Fix the system not those affected by it.
- Step 1: Force businesses to provide enough parking spaces for their employees. Fine them per day until they do it.
- Step 2: Refuse planning permission for new buildings which don’t have adequate parking.
- Step 3: introduce a decent public transport system which would be good enough for the locals to consider using
- Step 4: sort out the taxis, clean them up, get them using the meter etc”
Passed by a gas station the other day who just opened up Trolley. Apparently all new Trolley’s in gas stations will have Starbucks now instead of Coffee Bean. I asked why didn’t they open a Coffee Bean and they told me the contract with them ended, so now you’ll be seeing a lot more of Starbucks.
I went on a different day to pick up a sandwich from Starbucks but the gas stations was so packed because everyone was going to Starbucks it wasn’t worth it. More than half if not most the people in the gas station weren’t there to fill up gas, but were there for the coffee.
