A technician fearing for his life posted his story on reddit, it’s relating to a popular way of gulping a lot of money in Kuwait. Getting a contract for a big project and charging 300%+ it’s initial cost. This time however, someone died in the process due to this corrupted agreement. His story is below, it’s an interesting read.
“This one is a little long, but please be patient. I work for a maintenance contract company (private firm) in Kuwait Ports Authority, Shuwaikh. A few months ago the maintenance engineer of the port (Mr. A, government employee) came up with a proposal to “upgrade” the electrical panels at the port. The proposal was accepted and a tender was floated (KD 200,000) which was picked up by another maintenance company (Company A, another private firm) at the port. So Mr. A goes to company A and tells them that he will fulfill the tender agreement using his connections. He made an agreement that company A will get KD 30,000 just for being the front (doing nothing) and he be given the rest KD 170,000 for doing the up gradation work. Company A agrees. Mr. A then involved his relatives and makes a cheap quality panel and equips it at the port. The panel is such bad quality that soon after the installation many connected equipment catch fire. A technician working for company A who was helping in the installation gets killed during the installation process. He died because of the cheap quality of the panel as it has 0 safety features and the whole equipment is a death trap. His death was quickly covered up as an “accident”. The man who died was an immigrant so nobody higher up looked into the matter. Now, after the death of the employee company A backs out of helping in the installation process and Mr. A starts to harass other companies working inside the port to help finish the work. The other companies somehow managed to install it so it works. But it is still a death trap. My problem is, since ours is a maintenance company we will be required to do routine maintenance on the equipment in the future and more deaths will happen. What can I do so people higher up takes notice of this issue and bring in experts to investigate the matter. It’s corruption so vile that they are playing with people’s life just for money. And this is not politicians playing with people’s life, it’s a maintenance engineer (not that politicians are allowed to). I feel helpless as an immigrant myself with little connections. I urge you Kuwaitis to stand up to this issue and guide me on what I should/can do.”[Link]
I wonder if there’s a hotline in Kuwait for reporting corruption.
