Just like Oman, Kuwait wants to cut its expat workforce and according to The Telegraph this is going to start as soon as April 1st where all new work visas are halted. There are currently 1.8 million foreign workers in Kuwait and it’s unclear whether existing visas will be renewed without any issues. Not sure why I feel Kuwait being the 4th unfriendliest country is related to this article.
The plan is to get 1 million expats out of Kuwait in 10 years to reduce reliance on imported labour, so that’s 100,000 expats leaving the country every year. I’ve heard similar laws being pushed in Kuwait decades ago and that they were never implemented so I’m not sure how serious the government is about this.[Source]
Update: Looks like new work visas have already started getting rejected.[Source]
