My car was up for a major service and the dealer said they’ll need the whole week day (which maxed out to 8 days later). Since it was going to take at least 5 days I rented a A1 2014 to try out. I was so impressed with the ride I wanted to write a review about it. It’s a tiny beast with a roaring engine inside.
Of course its main competitor is the mini cooper. The A1 is larger than the mini but is still pretty small and can fit pretty much anywhere. That’s something I loved driving a tiny car, it’s so easy to find a parking spot. The interior is simple and high in tech. You get a 6.5 inch screen and CD + SD card slot along with an AUX-in socket.
The one I got unfortunately didn’t have bluetooth for my phone to connect on but it had everything else. I like Audi interface, they use a universal look in all their cars. Better yet I read Audi is planning to adapt Android as their main interface with an app that lets you control your car. I can’t wait till that gets released.
The A1 comes with TFSI® technology which brings a lot of benefits including better fuel distribution, higher compression ratios (which means more power) and more fuel combustion efficiency. The S tronic is a new 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox that has a twin-clutch transmission system. It basically uses two clutches to change gears. I no longer feel the car switching gears, it’s now a seamless experience.
The back space is much better than I expected, people fit in there just fine. Tall people might hit their head if they lean back but overall it’s pretty good. The back trunk also has a lot of space. If I needed more space I can close the back seats and fit something large.
The one I rented was for KD 15 per day and overall was a fun ride. I will be renting it again next week as I have to take my car to the service again for 2 days. The A1’s starting price is KD 7,140 which isn’t cheap at all but those that like mini cars will find it worth the money.
