You’d think “Zafran” is an Arabian restaurant, it’s not but it certainly serves some good Arabian food. It’s an Indian restaurant located at Center Point Salmiya, not the best place to open up a restaurant but the food makes the place worth passing. I have to say this is my new favourite Indian place.
We started off with a Watermelon Salad which had feta cheese, rocco leaves and honey balsamic vinegar. Restaurants rarely offer a watermelon salad so was excited to find out they offered one. The preparation was on the spot as it was convenient to eat up the salad with the watermelon pieces being small.
When the cocktails were served I got the impression I was in some island somewhere next to the beach. Zafran has a unique variety of juices to pick from including some of their signature ones. The one I tried was a mix of yoghurt and mango which was very heavy.
These are Yoghurt Patties, notice they put some sauce on the bottom to keep them still while at the same time adding some flavor. The patties come crumbed and fried, they tasted different and had some crisp to them having been fried. An appetizer I recommend trying.
To my pleasant surprise they were serving Fish Dum Biryani (Hammour Biryani), a new addition to their biryani dishes which I highly recommend. The pot comes sealed in a piece of bread to preserve the smell. They do have different types of biryanis (gallery below) that include lamb, chicken and shrimp biryani.
Zafran have recently launched their new sizzling grill which everyone on the table loved. It’s good for up to three people and includes kebab, shrimp and chicken. If you’re not in the mood for Indian or just want something different this is what I would order, wish they offered some hummos on the side with this.
Murg Makhani (Butter Chicken) is my favourite Indian dish and it tasted great. What I normally do is order bread that has been rubbed with butter and eat the whole dish like it was a “تشريبة”. The bread I recommend with this dish is called Naan Butter Bread, the Naan Garlic Bread is also something you should try.
We tried three different desserts and the Pistachio Kulfi was the one I liked the most, it had Indian milk ice cream with saffron and pistachio. The other two consisted of deep fried cottage cheese dumplings and carrot/orange dessert. Great food overall and definitely going back to try the very same dishes.
