This amazing photo was shot when this fighter jet was hitting the sound barrier, “the point at which an aircraft moves from transonic to supersonic speed”. This takes place when anything moves faster than 1,225 km/h (761 mph), which also makes a sound similar to an explosion. I remember hearing the sound few years ago in Lebanon.
A few fighter jets were passing by and all of a sudden you could hear this huge explosion coming from the sky. I can’t imagine at what f-stop would a photographer set his camera at. This needs all the patients in the world to get the shot spot on. The most widely known sound barrier photo was taken by Ensign John Gay, it won several awards.[Flickr]
