At days I felt the challenge was easy, other days it felt hard to maintain lunch for 1 KD, especially since I was at the Avenues walking passed all those restaurants that I use to go and eat at. I’m still doing the challenge and since many asked for an update, I’m posting my first three days experience.
A lot of people have followed me on Snapchat to watch the challenge and many offered great advice. My username on Snapchat is: x.u (link)
Observations so far:
- We came to realise with a 1 KD budget we can either get quality food or quantity food, not both.
- It’s only been 4 days but I already have a newfound appreciation for food
- Eight falafels for 100 fils at Kelha is one amazing deal
- I made an excel to track my budget, if I spend less than 1 KD, the rest accumulates to use the next day
Day 1: Since Cafeteria Shuwaikh just opened next to us, I thought it was a good idea to start off with Fatayer that can easily fill me up for less than 1 KD. I looked at the menu, talked to the guy, everything was good, I was exactly at 1 KD. When I reached the cashier and he punched in my order, it was 1 KD + 50 fils! So I had to make a scene and explain I was 1 KD, but he wouldn’t budge.
- 1 Full Halloum Fatayer
- 1 Laban/Zaatar Fatayer
- 1 Small Leban
- Spent: 1.050 KD
- Next Days Budget: 950 fils
Day 2: We decided to go cheaper the next day so that we can save some of the money, that way we’d have something like 1.5 KD the next day and get a full meal instead of just sandwiches. I ordered one Super Falafel and one Foul Wrap which was for a mere 450 fils, best of all everyone was full after ordering.
- 1 Super Falafel
- 1 Foul Wrap
- 1 KDD Milk Chocolate
- 1 Small Activia Yoghurt
- Spent: 0.675 KD
- Next Days Budget: 1.275 KD
Day 3: On the third day I had enough money to afford some delicious meat, so we went to Kurdo. The guy serving us saw how picky we were with money, and getting the best value for every fils we spent, he felt bad and asked me, “where do you work?”. It just boggled him how men in suits are so picky and barely ordered anything I guess. I had a Fajita Chicken Wrap then went to Carrefour and bought a ton of cheap good stuff.
- 1 Chicken Fajita Kurdo
- 2 Arwa Water
- Oreo Milk Chocolate
- Belvita Biscuit
- Schweppes Ginger Ale
- Spent: 1.305 KD
- Next Days Budget: 970 fils
So that’s that, I’m now much more dependant on the office’s free coffee and water. Weekends don’t count, although the past weekend the only time I paid for food was at Subway. I recommend people try it, at least appreciate what you take for granted. Don’t forget to use the #1KDChallenge hashtag so I can see your challenge.
