I was talking to a friend and was shocked to find out he spent a week in prison. It wasn’t twitter related but rather more about he signed stuff he got sued for (it’s a long story). So I started asking him about what the people he spent time with in jail were convicted for and many were in jail over a tweet they tweeted.
I thought you only face jail time if you curse or bad talk the royal family but there’s a lot more ways to get in jail over a tweet now. To start off, he was in jail with (without mentioning any times) a very popular Kuwaiti twitter celebrity that was facing 3 weeks of jail time over tweets he wrote. Something about Saudi Arabia’s ruling family.
Another guy was in jail for a week for badmouthing Kuwait’s National Team couch. Apparently the couch found out about the tweet and sued him for damages over it. The guy jailed wasn’t popular on twitter, from what I know he had around 2,000 followers max.
Basically, even though there are no written laws as of yet for online rulings or regulations you can still get imprisoned over something you tweeted. You can easily get sued over a tweet, so be cautious and careful when you’re being negative, avoid pointing the finger directly at someone. Often times that’s how you get in trouble.
