This movie was so hyped manufacturers were making Tron products before it was even released. Like Tron’s gaming mouse by razer or Tron’s Bike Suit. They even made a Tron’s clothing store that sells everything they used in the production of the movie. The media just had to bring it up in any possible given subject. But unfortunately the only part of the movie that reached my expectations were the computer graphics.
Story Board 3.5/10
It amazes me how many things are left unanswered. Like where on earth do they find food inside this digital world filled with users and programs. But what made me go berserk was the ending. [Spoiler Alert] He enters the new world. He finally gets to meet his dad that has disappeared for all those years. He keeps insisting they work as a team and return together. Ends up leaving his dad to self destruct. He returns happily, nothing emotional just happened and he wants to take back the company which he already owns for no apparent reason.
Computer Graphics Imagery 8/10
Being a graphic designer and having to design 3 dimensional models. I can understand how much painstaking effort was put in this category. Some scenes blew my mind away from the sheer beauty of the rendered structure. In some rare occasions I could see that the lines on their suit were just stickers that glow. That was a total turn off, but generally speaking the CGI was impressive.
Apart from Jeff Bridges, the acting was awful. The main character Sam Flynn(Garrett Hedlund) could have been replaced by a hand full of other actors that would have easily done a better job. His flaws were mostly in emotional scenes. At the beginning of the movie, when it’s all 2D and he meets up with his dads friend. He couldn’t convince me that he was the careless but happy living guy at all. To me, his biggest fault was reacting to something with the wrong facial expressions.
Digital 3D 2/10
To my surprise, almost half the movie wasn’t 3D. You’d be happy to know the only thing in the movie that’s 3 dimensional throughout the entire movie is the Arabic translation at the very bottom. Even after Flynn teleported to the other world there were many scenes that weren’t 3D. And those that were, did not have a huge difference that gave you the feeling of a 3 dimensional world. I came in a few minutes late. After the movie was over my friends told me they were informed on screen that some of the movie was in 2D. So subsequently paying for tickets and entering the movie, we get told a lot of the movie is 2D. How fare is that.
If your the type of person that just wants to watch a lot of action, get an adrenaline rush and leave. Then this movie is for you. If you focus on the plot, the story board, the script then I suggest you search elsewhere. I don’t blame the critics over at Rotten Tomatoes for giving this movie 48%. I do think this could be a great success if it were an Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game focusing on player versus player(PvP).
